shoulder cortisone injections

Question: How long should a person wait to begin physical therapy after having a cortisone shot for shoulder impingement syndrome? thanks.

Answer: This is a great question. If you are having the injection because the shoulder is painful but not stiff, then waiting a week is generally recommended. This will allow time for the inflammation to calm down and for you to be able to tolerate resuming strengthening exercises. If, however, your shoulder impingement is related to reduced shoulder range of motion or stiffness, starting physical therapy within a couple of days is normal. You will want to take advantage of the immediate benefits in order to work on the range of motion.

Good luck and hope this helps!
